Overwatch - Trailers

Sledgstone

In a time of global crisis, an international task force of heroes banded together to restore peace to a war-torn world. This organization, known as Overwatch, ended the crisis and helped maintain peace for a generation, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch's influence waned and it was eventually disbanded. Now in the wake of its dismantling, conflict is rising once again. Overwatch may be gone…but the world still needs heroes.

Overwatch is a highly stylized team-based shooter set on earth in the near future. Every match is an intense multiplayer showdown pitting a diverse cast of soldiers, mercenaries, scientists, adventurers, and oddities against each other in an epic, globe-spanning conflict.

I'm more impressed by the Cinematic trailer than I am by the actual gameplay. Blizzard can surprisingly make Pixar quality movies. The game looks like a fun FPS multiplayer with heroes like a MMOBA game. I hope they do more with this game than just make a competitive shooter. I'd love to see a single player / co-op campaign. With a cinematic trailer like that, the cut scenes would be great.

I believe, based on what I've heard XFactor and Matt say, that the amount you loose or gain is based on the skill ratings of the other team. I know the system keeps you pretty well matched for skill ratings (going so far as to try and match you against other teams that have similar make ups (like if you queue as a team of two it tries to match you with opponents of similar make up)) but I do know you do occasionally run into a team that has a few higher skilled players. Like I said I'm not entirely sure but I've seen Matt loose whole ranks because he lost to a team comprised of higher ranked players. I've also seen him gain an entire rank for winning against the same type of team. I'm sure other factors are brought into the equations, like how badly you lost or how badly you stomped the competition, but it seems ranks heavily influence your loss or gain.

I think Blizzard made comp mode to do just that, make you play with who you're good with much like a MOBA does (most pro MOBA players stick to the same heroes exclusively, you rarely see any of them choose something different (then again they also play on teams so they can do this)). This is generally why if you watch Matt or XFactor they stick primarily with who they're good at (X loves and is a beast with McCree but he also switches out for Roadhog and the occasional Pharah. Matt generally sticks to Ana, Tracer, Reinhardt, and most recently Junkrat). Same could be said for any of the competitive players and streamers which is why I'd be scarred to play comp. I'm really only good with Mercy, Reinhardt, and Lucio but I don't always want to be thrown into playing just healers and tanks. However, as we know, I'm more then willing to eat the bullet and do whats best for the team even if it does irk me from time to time.

That sudden death system needs to be revamped imo. It pretty much always favors the attackers but then again I'm speaking from the PC side. Most of the game modes that can end in ties pretty much always favor the attacking team and considering it's based on a coin flip it really does suck when you get stuck on the defending side. That meta is slowly starting to shift into a more even playing field now (what with certain heroes being nerfed and buffed) but it still favors the attacking team more so then not.

Ah, I didn't take the skill factor much into it, because I only saw 2 matches were the teams average were a point off, the rest were even. Me and a friend are only 3 points away from each other. The cap is within 50pts. So I imagine having more than one person in queue that started at different times can bring up more interesting matches.

I don't think it gets really crazy until you get into the high 60s. I've seen people bitch about Genji being OP because the best players dominate with him in super high comp. Honestly that's the whole point of Genji, right? He def doesn't need a nerf on console. If you're that damn good with him, more power to you. I wouldn't be scared to play competitive. It offers a way to get rewards whether you're bad or good. Ranking up gives you a competition point, even if you get ranked down and go back up. I saw a 49 with Winston's gold weapon. That means he gained a rank 200+ times and he was only near 50. He probably started in the 30s and ranked up and down to 50. There is still incentive to play. I'd like to get better with Lucio, but damn I can't aim worth a shit with him. I'm so much better with Zen, that discord orb is so beastly. I was tearing apart all the tanks single handedly at some points. I faced up against a good zen player that kept me out of my suit pretty much the entire match when I was D.Va. But yeah, hes not a dedicated healer... although I've become pretty good at keeping people alive in quick play as long as they don't stray off too far. I'll probably always be a 50-60 rank player, but it wont take my enjoyment out of competitive play. I just want to end the next seasons in the 60s to get that sweet 200cp.

In the beta i was only decent with Torb and Reinhardt. Since, I have expanded my resume. I never thought Junkrat would be my favorite character, but I'm absolutely massacring with him right now. I'm averaging 30-40+ elims a match. That mine will kill Genji in one direct hit. I've shut him down so many times during his Ult, and I've mastered shutting down the opposing junkrat's tire with it too. I also like to lure Reinhardt toward me until my mine gets behind his shield and BOOM. I still have mishaps with the jump that my friend gives me hell for. It's a running joke that I wish i could mine jump as good as I can double kill with it. XD It's just a matter of utilizing quick play. I use to have to rely on Torb when I started doing bad, his nerf is probably the best thing that happened to my level of skill. Torb is pretty bad right now on console, but damn I love when i get some of that armor as Winston, talk about super-tank. XD I'm trying to get into Roadhog, Lucio, and Zarya in quick play while I hone my skills with Zen. I'll probably stay away from Junkrat and only use him in competitive.

Mercy has become really undervalued since her "buff seen as a nerf". Competitive mode could use more of her. A lot of my 10-15 kill streaks are because a spot on mercy player was keeping me alive. The biggest emotional roller coaster in this game is when everyone dies and we all get resurrected while the match is about to end with us holding the point down. XD But, damn its the best feeling in the world. I'll def jump on Zen or Zarya when someone I know is playing Mercy to provide her with the protective buff.

For me, I prefer defending on sudden death, just because I feel like I don't have to rely on my teammates as much. I can prevent multiple people from capping a point better than I can solo cap, while half my team is hanging back fighting instead of pushing. It happens a lot less in competitive, but it still happens. King's Row is probably the worlds worst for this. I'll always go for Junkrat and D.Va on this map just so I can jump the wall and contest the point in hopes that my teammates will rush in. It never fails, once I contest the point the other team freaks and they all come charging at me forgetting about my entire team. I do this on Hanamura as well. I'll use Reaper on quick play to teleport into the room on the right sometimes. One of the funniest matches I had today was on Hanamura. When we capped A, the defending team kept fighting at A, I booked it to B and pretty much solo capped it. XD

Edit: My mind is all over the place and its late. :P

Mei’s Blizzard projectile now pierces barriers, and its radius has been increased from 8 meters to 10 meters

So she should be able to put up an ice barrier and now shoot thru it? That could be quite useful. I wonder if this is what they mean. If so she should be able to shoot thru Reinhardt's shield and Winston's barrier too. That could be quite powerful. I remember in the beta I was one shot killing people with a head shot with that attack.

That would be a neat trick to pull off, but you'd def have to get everyone in a tunnel since you can't see through your wall, and the range you can toss her ult is not that good to begin with, so you could cut off more than 30% of your ult's effective area. It's more useful to toss it through Reinhardt's shield, because people are grouped up behind him. Now you could put the ice wall behind the team, and toss the ult giving them no chance to back up after feeling safe behind the team shield.

So they really didn't do anything the Zenyatta by what I read except make his Orb somewhat weaker so teammates can't take advantage of that damage boost then increase his base damage by a factor of roughly 7%. Not complaining but its just odd they'd nerf his Discord but up his base damage. Whatever, I'm sure Blizz knows what they're doing. The buff to Mercy's healing is nice (making me happy since I know I'll be playing a lot of her once I get Overwatch).

That's a pretty harsh nerf to Genji considering how hard he actually is to master. This will probably kill his pick rate once the patch hits (kind of like how Widow's nerf killed her pick rate). I can understand the double jump change and the Swift Strike change towards interrupting quick attacks but the Dragonblade nerf is unwarranted. 8 seconds is not a lot of time to begin with to get kills unless you happen to be right in the middle of the enemy team (which most Genji's are when they use it) but I've always thought of his ultimate to be a room clearing ability. He's a ninja for god sakes, he's supposed to be extremely good at killing people. The Dash nerf is also a little questionable as ninja's are fast and agile and should be able to bypass traps without setting them off, the damaging thing I can somewhat agree with (though honestly I've never been able to notice Widow's traps on the ground (I honestly don't even know what they look like, I only played her like 3 times in the beta and I have never actually tripped one while fighting against her)). I sense a lot of bitching once the patch hits and they'll backtrack on some of the changes I'm sure (or tweak them somewhat). Mei's change is meh.

His Ult shouldn't have been touched. Getting a team wipe requires a bit of luck on top of skill, along with your team having poor awareness. Every time I hear Genji say his ult line, I focus him immediately. He's still squishy and easy to kill during his ult. We'll be seeing a lot more Tracer, which means I gotta play a lot more Winston.

Basically Zen has Mercy's old damage buff rate, but the whole team gets it on a single target. Its still pretty powerful, just not insta-melt. His orbs got buffed back to what they were before he got his HP increase. He's still viable which makes me happy.

Edit: wow, Hanzo got a big buff

Ohhh.. its her ult. I thought it was her icicle projectile they were talking about. Her ult going thru barriers isn't nearly as big of a nerf as I thought it was. lol.

I'm surprised they nerfed Ganji's mobility but then buffed Hanzo's mobility while aiming. Theres going to be alot more Hanzo being played.

O.o I'd love a Reinhardt one, besides Mercy he's my favorite character. I'd also like to see one for Mercy. Is it me or were there multiple Reinhardt's in that other Bastion's memories? I'm taking it that Reinhardt's armor isn't just unique to him (I spotted at least two in the short wearing the same armor carrying hammers, one of them could of possibly been Reinhardt) and was something that other Overwatch agents and soldiers wore during the omnic crisis.

I have a feeling they'll do one for each character or at least the characters that haven't had much screen time in the various other shorts and promotional vids (we've had one for Winston, 76, Widowmaker, Hanzo/Genji and now Bastion. There were those animated comic shorts for Roadhogg/Junkrat and Ana but I get the feeling they'll get proper shorts somewhere down the line). I did like 76's short (and I loved Hanzo/Genji's) but there just something about Bastion that just made his video so adorable (for lack of a better term). He's the little robot who could (plus his friendship with that bird is just cute, it's nice to see how he overcame his original programming (though it seems his memory is rather fragmented so that may have something to do with it as well)).

I absolutely blow with McCree. Every once in a while on Quick Play I'll bust him out as a joke. Today I went 13-0 on Hanamura. It was the most satisfying performance I've ever had. I shut down people 9 times on the objective. Mostly Genji, Tracer, and Reinhardt. Catching tracer with the flashbang feels so damn good.

Season 2 is underway and the new scoring system is brutal. I've fallen to 2250 from just 2 losses from the 2400's and now I can't seem to get back. I'm in limbo in 2300's. I played with a friend most of the night and we just couldn't catch a break with the idiots that don't need to be playing competitive. I rather have someone that is bad with the right character than someone that is bad with the a character that gives even the best player zero chance to succeed. Overwatch is amazing in its team chemistry, you simply cannot solo carry a team, you can't even duo or trio carry a team. I wish there was a "avoid this player" option. Apparently there was and it was taken away. Honestly if you're going to play Torb, Symmetra, Widow, or Bastion on attack, you deserve 5-10m queues that keep increasing as more people avoid you to where you'll only play QP because it takes too long to find a match. It can reset each season until they learn how to play. I hate to sound elitist, but I'm really not. I play who I'm best with that helps the team in the right situation.

Leaving penalties should be drastically increased. Its a stretch to win 5v6, but its possible. I had a whole team leave on us tonight after just one person left. They should really set it up to where the person can only reenter the match until its over no matter what playlist they try to pick... and if they don't come back they should get a 24 hour ban from competitive instead of 10 min.

Now that I've vented that out, overall its a lot more enjoyable. Ana's pick rate has finally decreased to a rarity in comp. Genji is a rare sight as well. Even with Hanzo's buff there isn't a lot of him. 76, McCree, Phara, D.Va, Roadhog, Rein, Mercy and Lucio have the highest pick rates. Mei's pick rate has increased, and rightfully so. Her ult is really OP now. I think they need to drop the radius back to what it use to be. Its impossible to escape unless you're D.Va, Repaer, or Phara. The fact it can ignore shields and barriers makes it powerful enough IMO.

Winston needs a damn buff. The only thing he is good as is tearing up Genji and Tracer. His jump pack needs a shorter CD and that would probably take care of a lot. Hit ult could use a buff as well, because honestly its not scary at all, it does minimal damage. I sat there and just kept dropping nades on him as he pushed me into the wall when I was Junkrat. I let him do it because i knew he couldn't kill me with his ult and he eventually had to run away. Thats pretty sad. His pick rate as a tank is by far the worst if not an overall character. With Genji's pick rate declining so much, there isn't much use for him right now. He can't beat any tank head to head, in fact, D.Va and Roadhog will slaughter him easily.

QP should be enjoyable for everyone playing the free trial starting tomorrow. It was really iffy during the off season. If you got caught against a team of high tier competitive pro's it was a steam roll short match. Those are def not enjoyable, especially on control when you get stomped and they cap A and B in under 2 min.

I'll play this weekend during the free trial but I doubt I'll pick up the game anytime soon with the backlog of specific games I'm trying to get thru before BF1 launches. If competitive mode is available for these free players I feel bad for you. I could only imagine the trolls that will get on there.

You'd also have to hit 25 before you could access Comp anyways Sledge so unless you planned on playing it constantly over the next 3 days you probably wouldn't even get in.

Meh, I'd play but I won't have time this weekend (too much other shit going on plus I wasn't planning on having to work today which took up half of my day).

Unless people play with friends that already have the game, it looks like trial players will just play each other along with people that just bought the game in the last 2-3 days. I ran into 1 pure level 1 today out of the 5-6 hours I played. The friend I play comp with didn't get on so I didn't play much of it. I almost dropped down into the 2100's but managed to pull my myself back into the 2300s. There are several names I'm starting to recognized, and its astonishing how they keep getting placed on my team. There is one guy that does nothing but play Torb, I don't know how he can say in this tier, I figured he'd drop low and I'd never see him again, but no he gets paired on my team, at least 3-4 times in the last two nights. -_-; It sucks when someone takes Junkrat and doesn't get off of him when they aren't doing well. I lost a match on Nepal because a D.Va just sat in a corner and held down fire. No one would do anything about it, and I didn't have enough DPS to finish her because her whole team would would melt me if I tried, while she melted my dumbass teammates not paying attention. The only way I could have gotten her was with Junkrat's mine, but the guy playing Junkrat never even tried to go after her. My other option was Zarya and Reinhardt... both taken and ignoring D.Va. I was the only one on my team swapping characters trying to deal with it with what I had. Sometimes competitive can be so maddening. I'd like to spend a day on the other side of this stupidity. And its not because I'm up against a pre-made vs. Randos. Comp actually does a decent job of pairing solo q's vs. each other even though there is no true solo q. When I'm with a friend, we get paired up against teams that have a party of 2, or both teams have split parties.

I spent most my night in QP sharpening more character skills. I might try to get better with Mercy. I had a pretty decent match with her on the new map. My biggest weakness is I'm too eager to get in on the action and with Mercy you can't do that. Sometimes I get too aggressive with Zen, especially when there is a Bastion on the other team. I generally hate playing characters that have to rely on others because I'm always let down while I see opposing teams use these characters and dominate an entire match. I stopped picking Reinhardt completely because no one ever has my back. I'll just have someone flank my back and melt me from both sides while my team just ignores whats going on. I can't play DPS and tank competently, but I'm a terrible support player.. hell even when I'm Zen, I get too caught up into my fights, I forget to heal my teammates.

I'm getting pretty deadly with 76 and Roadhog. With D.Va becoming a favorite pick for everyone, I have to expand my skill set... plus you get more comp points when winning with a character you don't use a lot apparently.

I caught to videos tonight. The first one is my usual Junkrat antics... but I realized I killed the guy playing Solider 76 a LOT with my concussion mine. XD I know he was probably getting really irritated with me.

This second video was a loss, but I had the match of my life with Roadhog. Its the best I've ever done with him. I'm learning not to be so aggressive like I'm playing battlefield. You really have to pick and choose your engagements in this game, and I always have to remind myself of that, becasue thats never how I've played. XD Excuse the tea bag, I really hate Mei, and I had a Mei tea bag me a few nights ago, and I made a point to hook and kill her a lot afterwards, so now I have a bad habit of tea bagging every time I kill a Mei. :P
