I'm no expert on polar bear social groups but I do understand canine pack behavior. In that short clip it seems as though the bears have been adopted into the pack. The dude has set his boundaries as pack leader with all of the animals (everybody play nice n bears stay a certain distance away from pack leader) the strong pack leader is why it works. the photog's experience is teh awesome. She was trying to take care of some ugly abandon kid maternal instinc;, sympathy, empathy, a sense of responsibility for the next generation. AND, the bear is the bigger animal ... YET, we see that the bear is also the most submissive of the two! So ironic ... image shattering. I watched this video so many times last night ...
