Bloom Box could be the magical fuel cell that saves the world

Recommended Posts

Five to ten years from now, you could have a $3000 fuel cell power generator the size of a clock radio in your basement, turning natural gas into electrical power at twice the efficiency possible today. That's the promise of the Bloom Box, a tiny power plant that combines oxygen and natural gas, biogas, or solar energy, and creates electricity.

So far, Bloom Boxes are the size of about four refrigerators, costing $700,000 to $800,000. Early adopters are companies such as eBay and Google, already saving money using these boxes. But the founder of the secretive Bloom Energy, K.R. Sridhar, says that the cheap materials inside and the inherent efficiency of his design could change the world, bringing cheap energy to everyone in a box that will cost less than $3000.

The big questions now: Is it possible to mass produce this magic box? The company cranks out just one per day now. And, is that $3000 price point realistic? Will power companies buy this technology and bury it? Can this be used in cars? The company's official launch is this Wednesday. It feels like the world just changed.

:picknose: I didn't know Steven Spielberg's Boom Blox could do so much...

:tko: *Sledge TKOs Myk.*

:dead: Er... Yeah... "Bloom Box" is a must.

Those who fight deplorables should see to it that they themselves do not become deplorables.

I'm surprised they remade Carrie yet again. This does look like good remake and I'm sure I'll watch it, but with the amount of Stephen King novels out there, I'm really surprised that Carrie keeps getting revisited. I would love to see a proper "It" movie, "The Talisman", "Insomnia" or especially "The Dark Tower".

Well, holy shit. If they get this working, It'll solve the predicted global helium shortage as well as producing massive amounts of energy. Win / Win.

I can't wait until this is a fully viable energy solution. If they can condense down a fusion reactor to a smaller size, everyone could have their own power source for their houses or even their cars. Could you imagine never having to fill up a gas tank or recharge a battery again? I wouldn't be surprised if car companies are working on electric only cars just for the day when small fusion engines are made. Once that happens all the car companies with electric cars will be able to just drop the new reactor engine in and they'll be good to go.. and all the car companies with only gas or flex fuel engines will struggle their asses off to catch up.
