Two Hours of Gaming is Equivalent to a Line of Cocaine

Recommended Posts

Two hours of video games is equivalent to a line of cocaine, UK conselor and therapist Steve Pope estimates in a breathless report on gaming addiction recently published by the Lancashire Evening Post (via GamePolitics).

"Spending two hours on a game station is equivalent to taking a line of cocaine in the high it produces," Pope says. "It is the fastest growing addiction in the country and this is affecting young people mentally, as well as leading to physical problems such as obesity."

Pope says he deals with teens who skip school and steal to play games, and that some play for as long as 24 hours straight. He also suggested that game addiction can "spiral into violence" when players "turn their fantasy games into reality."

He says ominously after noting that he is working with a grandmother who is reportedly addicted to online poker and a granddaughter who is addicted to Facebook, "The poisioned chalice is being handed down through the generations."

The article also holds up as an example Premier League soccer players who are reportedly banned from games 24 hours before a match because of the "natural high" leading to poor performances on the field, and quotes one mother who says buying her son Call of Duty was like buying him "his first shot of whiskey."

The article concludes by emphasizing the need for balance in one's life. Senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Central Lancashire Gayle Brewer says, "It is important to find a balance. It is easier for parents if they set ground rules from the start about how long their child is allowed to spend on these types of games."

Sound advice indeed. In the meantime, how many "lines of cocaine" did new releases like Red Dead Redemption provide for you over the weekend?

I haven't played a game in almost two days.. *twitch* I need my fix man! *twitch*

X'D

What do you think? Is gaming rushes equal to drug rushes?

I cried when Aeris died on FF7. That count?

Never gotten any kind of high from gaming o.0.

We all did, Khell. We all did.

I do need my gaming fixes every day or I get really antsy and agitated, but its not a friggin "drug" by any literal means.

I didn't, I actually laughed at how corny it was. Then I got depressed when I realized she was my only healer >.<

I really wish 2 hours of gaming was like taking a line of cocaine, I could use a high right now. About all gaming does now is frustrate the hell out of me.

The biggest "rush" I've ever gotten from a game was a down to the wire domination match on COD4. It was on Ambush and we were holding on to the hardest flag to keep. Bullets were flying everywhere, I was on the verge of dying and I was able to take out the guy that was about to capture our flag... the match ended and we won by 10 points... Oh the celebration.

Cocaine seems like an "obviously bad" drug to compare games to, but the "high" is probably more comparable to drinking a caffeinated soda. And anything can become an "addiction" that negatively affects a person because they pursue it to an unhealthy degree. Some people are addicted to sticking oddly-shaped vegetables in their orifices--oh no! Better keep the carrots locked up to protect the children!

A couple hours of video games can also: improve hand-eye coordination, logical reasoning abilities, reading comprehension, teach you something new (look at all the mythology and history cropping up in games), among other positive effects. But why delve into those when you can blame your personal problems on video games? I'm fat, lazy, and ignorant--what's an easy cop-out? All those drugs I did when I was younger! All those video games!

Definitely Kite. For a long time I couldn't stop my hands from shaking when I was dueling/Arena'ing in WoW, knowing my skill and reputation were being observed and criticized. The adrenaline wouldn't stop! x_X;

"That fairy needs to stop shouting in my ear, or I'm going to throw her friend I have trapped in the bottle into a lava pit or something. HEY, LISTEN! No, YOU listen. If something's important, just say so without yelling at me. Or fly over to it and change color like you usually do. Just because I'm busy mowing the lawn and hoping I'll find some spare change, doesn't mean I can't hear you." - Link

Every once in a while I'll come across free games for PC that look really good. Anyone can feel free to update this topic with limited time free game links so we can add them to our ever growing backlog of games. If a game states how long it will be free for, please list that along with the link. Sometimes it won't be stated so if you click a link and its no longer free, then that promo must have expired. I've seen alot of free game listings off slickdeals or other blogs. I'll update this when I see good ones. I would post the free games with Amazon Prime, but I don't currently have amazon prime so if those appeal to anyone, feel free to post them since Amazon Prime generally gives away a couple free games a month.
      To start off with:
Little Nightmares is currently free with a Steam promotion until 05/30/2021 @ 10:00am (does not say if EDT, PDT, etc. )

Company of Heroes 2, Company of Heroes 2 Ardennes Assault - Limited Free Promotional Package, free for this weekend or until 05/31/2021? It doesn't say exact day it ends.

The new PlayStation 4 firmware update will include external HHD support for game installation. Finally. I honestly didn't realize the original PS4s even had USB 3. They are also finally adding custom wallpapers via screenshots. About damn time. The wallpapers in the online store are complete garbage. I'd still prefer to use my own .jpg files like on the PS3, but modders used that feature as a way to hack the system which is why we never got the functionality in PS4. Using a screenshot is completely fine with me.

Nvidia is launching an online game streaming service called GeForce NOW.
I'm going to quote myself here from another topic:
With Playstation having it's own streaming service and now Nvidia making it's own service, having to own physical consoles and PCs specifically for gaming might come to an end within our lifetimes.
The downside to the Nvidia service is the cost. I've been seeing the numbers "$25 per 20 hours of gaming" floating around alot. If so, thats a hell of an expense for now.

Am I the only one suffering from steam sale fatigue? Maybe its just me but ever since they changed the store to the design it is now nothing in the store appeals to me anymore. Its probably because of the massive influx of every game from every independent developer. Theres so many games on there that I never look at what new games came out anymore because in any given week 40+ new games were released and 250+ games are listed in their weekly sales. I stopped looking and only pay attention to humble bundle sales now. Even with the steam sale going on now I don't see any huge sale thats leaping out at me to take my money anymore. Sure I still have a backlog of games but there seems to be less and less new AAA or indie games that I'm interested in for PC. Unless its a game I want for console I hardly look at the steam store anymore even though I use steam on a daily basis.

Powered by the same GPU as the Nvidia Shield and a couple smart phones and chromebooks, (and not as powerful as current gen consoles or even close to gaming PCs), the Nintendo NX will use the Nvidia Tegra as a GPU/CPU combo for a handheld console with detachable controllers. It will also come with a home base that you can plug into to play the console on the TV. It will still play cartridges.
My guess is that it will look like the Wii U controller, except with detachable nunchuck controllers on the sides. I would photoshop something to look like that but I need a new photo editing program. ehh.

The Tegra is a decent chip, but I don't see Nintendo competing with Sony or Microsoft at this point anymore. Its like they are doubling down on their handheld market, which makes sense to me. They know how to make good handhelds and they sell. But if this is all true it seems a bit too gimmicky to me. The Wii and Wii U was all targeted at families and party games, but this is obviously targeted toward individuals and solo players. If the screen is the normal size of a cell phone and its meant to run games all the time, I wonder how hot the thing will get and if it'll need to be recharged every 2 hours.
