Sledgstone 8,672 Report post Posted January 18, 2012 Under PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), two bills being seriously considered in the United States, websites which contain or link to copyrighted material (even if posted by a user of the site) can be indefinitely blocked without trial or notice. If SOPA or PIPA were to pass, it will make random spammers and spam bots more than just an annoyance, it will make them dangerous to websites. Under these bills, if someone were to post a link to copyrighted material on our website or if we were to be targeted/flooded with spam that links to copyrighted material, Ancient Clan could be taken offline with no notice. Under these bills, content providers could even promote spam activity by underhandedly employing spammers to target competitor's websites, independent forums, blogs, etc. Once the major media outlets get their links spammed in the websites they want taken offline, most likely in comment areas or in forum topics, those websites can be taken offline without notice. This would make the internet nothing but a mainstream media outlet. CabbitGirl 4,018 Report post Posted January 18, 2012 so, essentially, if we don't get to a torrent posting spammer first and ban them and delete their post and someone from the government does first and sees it's a link to a torrent site, we could be shut down.... wtf

Strider Hiryu 2,704 Report post Posted January 19, 2012 Gotta love how the government thinks it has the right to control the internet. I find it funny that the two senators from my state are still on the fence, hopefully they'll get with it and go against it.

Sledgstone 8,672 Report post Posted January 20, 2012 X'D so, essentially, if we don't get to a torrent posting spammer first and ban them and delete their post and someone from the government does first and sees it's a link to a torrent site, we could be shut down.... wtf Yep. But depending on how far the copyright of pirated material is viewed, we may not even have to wait for a spammer.. Someone from Lucas films or Lucas Arts, etc. could complain about our Vader theme being a misuse of their copyrighted material and shut us down. SOPA and PIPA could completely fuck up the fair use copyright law on the internet.
Eppy 3,446 Report post Posted January 20, 2012 First victim of this horseshit is Megaupload...4 people were arrested and the entire site was shut down "That fairy needs to stop shouting in my ear, or I'm going to throw her friend I have trapped in the bottle into a lava pit or something. HEY, LISTEN! No, YOU listen. If something's important, just say so without yelling at me. Or fly over to it and change color like you usually do. Just because I'm busy mowing the lawn and hoping I'll find some spare change, doesn't mean I can't hear you." - Link

Dubird 6,815 Report post Posted January 21, 2012 Megaupload wasn't part of this SOPA whole thing. The FBI takes WAY more time to actually intervene on copyright law. And yeah, there's legit stuff on there, but to be fair, probally 90% of it is pirated. Still sucks, now I can't get the rest of Yugioh in Japanese. ; Yesterday was the deadline for all complaints!
