Sony Deals a Knock Out Blow to Xbox One at E3.

Recommended Posts

XD

If the futuristic PS2-like design of the PS4 didn't tip you off, Sony is looking to return to its glory days after crashing and burning this generation. Although a subtle message displayed at the bottom of one of their promos indicated that a subscription was needed to play multiplayer games, Playstation fans can quickly get over that with the delightful jabs they took at rival Microsoft.

Taking full advantage of last months firestorm over Microsoft's draconian stance on used games and online connectivity. Sony wasted no time setting things straight with the crowd at E3. PS4 will not need any online connectivity or 24 hour check-in requirement to play your games offline. On top of that, PS4 games will not be locked down on your console. You will be free to do as you please, whether that be sell them or lend them to a friend.

Despite reports that PS+ would be ditched for PS World... it seems those stories were false... PS+ is here to stay, and current subscriber accounts will carry over to the PS4.

The nail in the coffin came at the end.... the PS4, which supposedly has superior graphical output will have a price tag of $399.99... That is $100 less than the Xbox One.

That whole thing about PS4 being consumer friendly was awesome. That & the fact PS4 will still have PS Plus basically covered my wants. Then followed by TESO which in the future might replace PS Home for me. So I'm pretty excited by this.

That video though is an instant classic!

I needed a Blu Ray player and picked up the PS3. Don't need the PS4. I can see how this is bad for a gamer where he/ she has to invest in a new console every few years and a new bunch of games that don't come cheap with no backwards compatibility.

This past gen was the longest ever... I see this generation being just as long, maybe longer... cost and development for a new machine is just too expensive now. Those 4 year generations are long gone IMO.

Is it really that hard to just keep your old console if you still want to play those games? The SNES/N64/Gamecube/Wii/Wii U doesn't play NES games unless you buy them through a remake cartridge or digital download . The Saturn/Dreamcast didn't play Genesis games... really I think we all got a little spoiled because the PS2 played PS1 games, and that was the extent of true backwards compatibility (not counting the multiple gameboys). The 1st model PS3 did, but after that it was phased out, and the 360 half assed their BC. The emulation costs money, and both company subsidize the price of their machines in the first place to make them "affordable" to the public. Its probably saving them a bit of money on the losses by excluding it. With as many game studios that have had to close shop in the last few years, Its safe to say the industry is having to rethink its business models.

What Microsoft is doing is bad for gaming yes. But no backwards compatibility isn't really that big of an issue seeing as it has not been a industry standard... Plus trading in your console towards the new one only gets you around $40-90 when you paid $300-500 for it originally... that's not a lot of store credit towards the new one.

That being said. the PS3 is an awesome blu-ray player, and it handles Netflix a lot better than 360. Unless they've fixed it. 360 always buffered when internet speed dipped or rose, and the fast foward/rewind options were imprecise.

GG if you think this is bad go play games on the computer, when your upgrading components almost every year or so to play the newest game. Console gaming is a lot cheaper and these are the first new consoles in 7 years (no slims do not counts, same thing just smaller). It's not like the the previous generations, where every 4 years or so you were forking up money for the new consoles.

I used to complain about no BC but now I'm with DX. Keep your old consoles, it's not that hard to do. I still own my PS2 and my original Xbox (since 360 BC was a joke, a handful of games that didn't even play correctly) to play my old games. Trading in consoles just isn't worth it and getting rid of them the minute they're obsolete is retarded.

And yes DX Netflix still does that on the 360. The minute your internet speed dips it needs to be buffered yet again and half the time the audio doesn't even line up correctly after that happens (gets very annoying).

Seriously? Its pointless to watch netflix on 360. The PS3 and PC doesnt do this... instead you might have a few seconds of reduced quality in picture, but it fixes itself pretty quickly. If X1 has this same issue its even more of a joke than it has become. Although you need PS+ to play online games, the netflix portion will still be free unlike XBL.

And yes. PC gaming is great, but too expensive for me... I'm really hoping Battlefield 4 will have 64 player battles on PS4... I cant afford to upgrade my graphics card again and get a PS4. lol... I'm already dreading finishing top 5 in gun master to unlock a weapon... in BF3 that was my crowning personal achievement and the most stressful thing I've ever done in a game...

Assuming Sony's Gaikai tech does what its supposed to, we should never have to worry about backwards compatibility again. Considering they're planning on eventually having all PS1, PS2, PS3, psp, vita games, etc. all available for streaming. It won't matter what the new hardware on future consoles will be as long as Sony has numerous servers running all the old hardware / emulation on there end.

Steam on the other hand is pretty damn good with backwards compatibility. From what I've seen, they have some old windows 95/98 games that play just fine on windows 7. But if you had those old game disks from back then, I highly doubt they'd install or play correctly.

At least with Steam, your game collection will follow you to whatever the latest operating system is, but the console companies love to make everyone keep buying the same damn games over and over to keep them playing on the newer systems. I'm hoping with Sony, that will end with their Gaikai system and allow everyone's digital libraries to now follow them to new consoles for generations to come.

Actually, for me, PC gaming is cheaper. If you get the highest end machine available at the time, it will last for about as many years as console for about the same. Now, granted, you'll probally end up upgrading your graphics card, but I've had this computer for about four years now, and the only thing I've upgraded was the graphics card because the old one died. And I'm still able to play the latest games. Granted, I can't always play in the highest graphics setting, but I honestly don't care about that. Since I also use my computer for work and other projects, it's something I have to keep upgraded for that anywas, so for me, it's easier and cheaper to game on PC vs. a console. Plus, it's really hard to impossible to mod games for console, and that's something I really enjoy playing with. ^_^ Nothing wrong with console gaming; we have several older ones and a PS3, and games to go with them that we break out from time to time. But, for some people, PC gaming is actually cheaper.

Yesterday was the deadline for all complaints!

I use to not care about highest graphical settings until BF3 XD. I can already tell BF4 will require yet another graphics card upgrade, and  for me its just worth buying the PS4 and playing it on that, on top of other games that wont be seeing PC like Destiny.

True, some people it is cheaper to keep a PC upgraded. I'm in the same situation having to keep my upgraded for various projects and what not but the average person will find buying a console once every 5+ years to be cheaper. I'm not one for graphics, never have been but I'd love it if I could get my damn $600 graphics card working in my damn laptop. The on board makes it freaking hard to play Skyrim >.< Modding games has never been my forte. I do it for certain games (Civ 5, Torchlight, and The Sims. I do have Skyrim modded but half of them don't work as well with my current graphics problems) but I'd just rather play the game, beat it, and retire it to the pile of games I have sitting in my closet. Hence why I like console gaming. Plus the games I like playing and want aren't always on the PC (Destiny for one).

That's just beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes.

PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now are merging into the new PlayStation Plus and the membership will now become a tiered system:

I'll be sticking with PlayStation Plus Essential assuming I can still buy yearly memberships on sale for around $30-$40 like I've been doing since before the PS4 launched. I'm barely getting any use out of PS+ as it is with the games they've been offering for the last year so if I have to start paying a monthly fee I'll just cancel it instead.
In comparison to the PS+ Extra, I've recently used Xbox PC game pass which I got a 3 month trial for $1 on black friday weekend last year. I don't have an Xbox so I was only using the lowest tier of the PC version which I suppose is the Microsoft Xbox PC version of PlayStation Plus Extra. It is an ok service but with the amount of time I have to dedicate to gaming I was only able to play and beat 2 games in those 3 months. I'm glad the xbox pc game pass came with EA Access since I was able to play and beat Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. EA Access itself didn't appeal to me because on the PC game pass its basically 70% sports titles. I was also able to play and beat Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and that game wasn't nearly as good as the first. Both games retail for around $14 and $7 when on sale so I saved roughly $20 with my $1 free trial. But if it was to pay $10 a month for the service I would have been in the hole $9 compared to if I bought those 2 games instead. For me and my available time to play games a subscription service is not a savings to me. Theres alot of people that could benefit from a game subscription service and I'm glad its an option for them.
I will say tho, for people that have an Xbox console and a game subscription service is beneficial to them, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has console and pc game pass combined along with xbox games with gold free monthly games, and that is a far better deal that PlayStation Plus Deluxe for the same price of $14.99 a month. The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also includes console and pc games that can be played from the cloud too kind of like Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming.

The new PlayStation 4 firmware update will include external HHD support for game installation. Finally. I honestly didn't realize the original PS4s even had USB 3. They are also finally adding custom wallpapers via screenshots. About damn time. The wallpapers in the online store are complete garbage. I'd still prefer to use my own .jpg files like on the PS3, but modders used that feature as a way to hack the system which is why we never got the functionality in PS4. Using a screenshot is completely fine with me.

For only $150 the Hori’s Tactical Assault Commander (TAC) Pro will give everyone on ps4 a huge advantage with mouse and keyboard controls. According to the box art of the product it is officially licensed by Sony and it's being sold at Gamestop and amazon. But if this is actually officially licensed then why doesn't Sony just allow keyboard and mouse input directly to the console so people don't have to pay $150?
