DeathscytheX 9,732 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 http://kotaku.com/5021677/games-sales-overtake-dvd-sales-in-the-us Oh goodie, another bound-to-be-misconstrued "games are bigger/better than X" story! This time, it's the results of the Entertainment Merchants Association's annual report, which reveals that not only did games rake in more cash than movie theatres last year, but for the first time DVD sales as well. While DVD sales amounted to $16 billion in 2007, and box office taking $9.6 billion, games took in $18.85 billion. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? It's a fun factoid for dininer parties and slow-moving bus stop conversations, but in the end, it means what it's always meant: games are expensive, while movies are less so. Plus Movies are far easier to pirate, and download. Quote GET A NEW FUNK ON BEFORE YOU GET DUMPED ON!

Pchan 5,162 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Actually the quality of movies has gone up since say 2/ 3 years ago, it's just that piracy is a lot more common, as it is to music cd sales. It's an inevitable step ... Quote I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do. DeathscytheX 9,732 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Meh, There have been a lot of good movies the past 2 years, but there were even more horrid ones. Most of the good ones were remakes or sequels. They predicted this a few years ago, and actually went further to say that the Gaming industry will even surpass the box office one day. Quote GET A NEW FUNK ON BEFORE YOU GET DUMPED ON! gokuDX7 2,871 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Ya, and the "good" ones probably make up the whole total DVD sales. Hollywood needs to learn that not everyone wants a remake or sequel to an 80's classic. They need to go back and learn how to be original and creative. Sledgstone 8,672 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 I think dvds shouldn't cost more than $10 a movie. If you think about the cost per entertainment quality, a $50-$60 game could give you 20+ hours of entertainment (more with replay value) while a movie will give you about 2 1/2 hours plus mostly unwatched dvd specials and extras. $50-$60 for 20+ hours or 60+ for a good rpg. $20-$30 for a couple hours. Games now give you more bang for your buck, more entertainment for your dollar and most are like interactive movies as it is. And many have better plots than most of the movies released in the past couple years. DVDs should be cheaper to compensate. Because most people would rather download a movie in 10 minutes than spend $30 on a special edition dvd thats just going to be re-released as another special edition dvd a year later, like the indiana jones movies.
