Latino Review reports that He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which has a script by Justin Marks, is dead at Warner Bros. Pictures in its current state. We quote:

The studio gave the execs at Silver Pictures a very small list of A-director names they would consider making the film with, amongst them Doug Liman and Bryan Singer who both passed.

There were some up and coming directors that were gung ho on the script, but the studio wasn't feeling them.

Another reason and perhaps the biggest was that Navid McIIhargey, the exec who brought in He-Man to Silver Pictures, left the company last month to become a Senior VP at New Regency as reported last month in both trades.

Sources tell me Navid and another exec (who also left Silver) – guys in their thirties who grew up on the property - were the unsung heroes of He-Man and are no longer there doing the day to day to get He-Man over the mountain and get the movie made.

Damn. Honestly, this is one remake movie that I would have wanted. Even a half-assed made He-Man remake movie would have been better than the original.

Start teasing up the “big hair,” slip in the shoulder pads, and pull out those parachute pants, the wave of 1980s nostalgia is gathering force—Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. and Joel Silver have tapped Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to helm a live action adaptation of He Man and the Masters of Universe. With Hasbro’s Transformers live action film already a huge hit and a G.I. Joe film on the way (see “Best in Shows: 2009, Part II”), it is easy to see why Mattel is pushing hard to get a He-Man movie, which has been in development since 2007 (see “Silver Pushes He-Man Movie”), to the big screen.

Mattel is hoping that viewers will have long forgotten the first He-Man live action movie, a campy 1987 crapfest that starred the splinter-inducing Dolph Lundgren and Frank (Frost/Nixon) Langella (in a role he would rather forget) as Skeletor.

Stevenson, who began his career with Jim Henson where he worked on The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, has also been involved with the production of Shrek, Shrek 2, Madagascar, and James and the Giant Peach as well as with the well-received Kung-Fu Panda. According to Variety, Warners is hoping that Stevenson will be able to “elevate” this reimagining of the He-Man mythos that will be based on a script by Justin Marks (Street Fighter, Voltron, Hack/Slash).

Variety has confirmed Latino Review's scoop that Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver have set Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to make his live action directing debut on Masters of the Universe, a re-imagining of the signature Mattel toy line.

He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Silver is producing through his Silver Pictures and Mattel's Barry Waldo will be executive producer.

WB acquired the property in 2007, and Justin Marks wrote the first draft of the script based on a story he wrote with Neil Ellice.

The Mattel property became iconic by way of the 1980s cartoon series "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," and the property was previously turned into a 1987 film starring Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frost/Nixon star Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor.

Stevenson said he made up his mind when he went to Mattel headquarters and was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff.

"There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into," Stevenson said. "It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

I don't think we need an over the top super chunky muscular He-Man, although he was that way in the cartoon, cos this generation of muscle men are formed/ built differently, too many veins, cuts, jizznitz not needed X'D. I say drop the movie, and let's not make a mockery of the legendary cartoon series o_0

He-man's liger, Battle Cat and She-Ra's horse/Unicorn Spirit/SwiftWind were always my fav. Swiftwind reminded me of Starlight, Rainbow Bright's horse.

Are they going to have She-Ra and who will they cast to play her?
