Candy Land and Monopoly board game movies? WTF.

Recommended Posts

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/14236.html

Variety is reporting that Universal is planning to take the silver screen to new heights of saccharinity with an adaptation of Hasbro’s tyke-skewing board game Candy Land. Although there is little in the way of a track record for this sort of “marzipan movie,” Universal is hoping that the results will be better than the movie version of Clue, which earned a mere $14.6 million back in 1985. Candy Land is just the latest, sweetest cinematic fruit of an agreement between Universal and Hasbro from early last year (see “Monopoly, Magic Movies on Tap”). Bladerunner helmer Ridley Scott, no doubt chastened by his experience with Kingdom of Heaven, has already signed on for a film based Monopoly (see “Ridley Scott to Direct Monopoly”).

For its Candy Land adaptation Universal has already secured talent with a proven track record in delivering hit films targeting a family audience. According to Variety, Universal has tapped Kevin Lima, who helmed the highly successful Enchanted for Disney, to handle the directing chores, while Etan Cohen (Madagascar 2) is writing the screenplay.

Why in the hell are they going to turn these two board games into movies? The monopoly movie better have a get out of free card. :wtf:

Well Clue was a good movie and it at least had a murder mystery theme to back up a movie. Monopoly has a better chance for being a movie than candy land because the Candy Land movie will be what, a couple kids tripping on mushrooms trying to find the evil witch's gingerbread house? and I bet it will be in 3D. :P

:omg:

I think it is obvious that Candy Land is going to be a kiddy movie that will make parents stomachs turn.

:hypnotise:

I at least hope though that Monopoly is a PG-13 comedy following some old bald white guy with a mustache... And doesn't go anywhere near romance because that would just make it lame.

:goodjob:

The board game I'd like to see turned into a movie is, Sorry (Rated R). A Death Race like film where the winning team of drivers gets to live. Creating a constant want to knock the other team's drivers off the road (And kill causing the need for new drivers for teams to start at the beginning.).

Those who fight deplorables should see to it that they themselves do not become deplorables.

And now Clue is being remade. X'D

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/14403.html

ore Verbinski, who accomplished the unlikely feat of turning an amusement park ride into a billion dollar motion picture franchise, is about to attempt to do the same thing with a board game. According to The Hollywood Reporter Verbinski is in final negotiations with Universal to direct a new feature film based on the perennially popular board game Clue. A year ago Universal and Hasbro signed a pact to work together to develop movies based on Hasbro-owned properties, and Clue is considered to be one of the most promising of those properties.

In fact Paramount did make a movie based on Clue some 25 years ago. It starred Christopher Lloyd and Madelaine Kahn and was as much a campy comedy as it was a mystery. It also featured three different endings (with different murderers) with three different versions released to theaters.

Verbinski is currently directing the animated feature Rango for Paramount, so Clue may not be the first Hasbro board game to reach the silver screen since Ridley Scott is working on an adaptation of Monopoly (see “Ridley Scott to Direct Monopoly”), Etan Cohen is writing an adaptation of Candyland (see “Board Game to Big Screen”), and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes has announced an Ouija Board movie.

And now Battleship. wtf.

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/14970.html

Peter Berg (Hancock) is slated to direct a film based on Hasbro’s Battleship game, according to multiple sources. Jon and Erich Hoeber, who wrote Whiteout, are writing the script.

The film is part of a long term deal between Hasbro and Universal (see “Monopoly, Magic Movies on Tap?”).

Hasbro just keeps the movie deals coming. Now its Stretch Armstrong. :wtf:

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/15080.html

Hasbro and Universal Pictures have announced a deal to produce a movie based on the retro Stretch Armstrong toy. Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster) and screenplay writer Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty) will team up to bring Stretch to the big screen on April 15, 2011.

“Stretch Armstrong is a character I have wanted to see on screen for a long time,” said Grazer. “He’s an unconventional kind of super hero with a power that no one would want. It’s a story about a guy stretching – if you will – the limits of what is possible to become all that he can be.”

Blond and uncannily flexible, Stretch Armstrong was originally produced in 1976 and was re-launched in the 1990s with a new villain and canine sidekick. The movie is the latest in a number of Hasbro toy and game products to be announced as receiving the big-screen treatment (see “Board Game to the Big Screen”, “Ridley Scott to Direct ‘Monopoly’, “’Battleship’ Gets Director, Writers”, “’Pirates’ Helmer Gets a ‘Clue’”) as part of a six-year agreement between Hasbro and Universal (see “’Monopoly,’ ‘Magic’ Movies on Tap?”) in the wake of the great success of Universal’s 2007 Transformers movie.

And now Hasbro sold Ouija movie rights... I bet this movie will actually be about people literally using the ouija board. O_O

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/16157.html

dward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who are writer/producers on the hit ABC series Lost, are penning the board game to screen adaptation of Ouija for Universal. Created in the 1890s and acquired by Parker Bros. in 1966, the Ouija board is the 20th Century’s most direct link to the spiritualism that proved so popular in the Victorian era. Hasbro reports sales of more than 12 million copies of the various iterations of the Ouija Board since Parker Bros. acquired the rights in the 1960s.

Universal is developing the Ouija film as part of its deal with Hasbro that has already seen development start on films based on Monopoly, Stretch Armstrong, Candyland, Battleship and other Hasbro properties (see “Monopoly, Magic Movies on Tap?”). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal sees Ouija as a supernatural action-adventure movie. Some rules of the game such as “never use it alone,” “never use it in a graveyard,” and “always say goodbye” may figure in the film’s plot.

In addition to their work on Lost, Kitsis and Horowitz wrote the screenplay for the Tron sequel, Tron Legacy.

I've gotten annoyed with managing my digital movie and tv series collection. It didn't bother me before because Netflix had pretty much everything. I'd never have to search for stuff on my hard drives or old dvd-rs because it would all be on Netflix. Now that Netflix has dropped about 50% of their content over the last couple years and will lose significantly more once all of Disney's properties are removed next year I've realized all my old dvds, blu rays and digital movies are all getting more use again. This is were plex comes in.
I setup plex on my main pc, moved a bunch of movies and tv series into some folders and set plex to use those folders. This program auto grabbed all meta data for the content, images, etc and is basically a Netflix clone. I was shocked by how efficient this is. I installed the plex client app on my ps3, ps4 and roku stick and as long as my pc with the plex server is running I can now stream all my content to every tv in the house. It even keeps track of where i left off in a movie and i can resume it on a different device if I want.
So I bought a 4tb hard drive yesterday and I'm going all in on this. I'm going to rip a bunch of my dvds and blu rays (the ones that don't have a digital copy) into mkv files and throw them on that hard drive for my plex. I'll try putting my old anime avi files (with hard coded subs from back in the old download days) in there to to see if plex can play those too.  Plex will even organise by genre to so it all works good. And plex is free.
I was thinking about buying a nvidia shield because it can be used as a plex media server instead of just a client like the PlayStation/roku apps but it looks like it has some limitations with file types and my old anime files would definitely not play on it unless i converted every file thru some program called handbrake. I'll look into that some more.
I figured I'd share this in case anyone else was getting annoyed with Netflix and every company making their own Netflix clones. Instead of paying every company a piece of the pie it'll be cheaper in the long run to just make my own Netflix with the content i already own that is already tailored to my preferances. And plex can stream outside of your home in 720p if you go on a road trip. I doubt I'll ever use that feature tho, especially with upload rates being shit with spectrum.
Go to https://www.plex.tv to get the media server and the PlayStation/xbox store/roku/android to download the plex app. I know this topic seems like am advertisement but they're paying me nothing and it's all free downloads anyway. it just works and works great.

I have noticed the selection isn't nearly what it used to be. Back in the day I'd search for a movie and 80% of the time it was on netflix. Now I don't even use the search feature because the last 20 movies I've searched for are never on there. Netflix used to be this great replacement to blockbuster with every movie made available, but now it looks like all the content rights holders and networks are pulling their properties off and either selling the rights to other streaming services like Amazon Prime or Hulu or they're making their own streaming service like CBS all access. I'm tempted to cut my cable and switch to streaming only services but I still haven't found a combo of apps or services that will give me the channel selection or content I fully want. I already have amazon prime and netflix. But to replace cable I figure if I go with Sling blue with HBO and starz, hulu, hbo go (part of my cable package now), and over the air HD antenna I'd have the majority of the channels I watch with cable except for science channel. I'd probably save about $30 a month over my current cable plan. Anyone use Sling?
Also, with the companies pulling their content from netflix and making their own streaming services, maybe in the near future cable will actually be a good deal again compared to being nickel and dimed by all the different apps? I do like seeing different streaming services offering competition like Sling and PlayStation VUE, but I still feel on the fence about actually cutting off my cable for streaming only.

If Nintendo had Pixar make their movies while maintaining control of the property so another "Super Mario Bros." live action fiasco never happens again, they could make some really awesome movies. But if Nintendo teams up with some companies in Japan that did the live action death note or attack on titan movies, this could lead to some huge flops.
