Its a plausible theory. I'd like that to be true. Mass Effect touched on this in a less dramatic fashion. Humans quickly gain influence on the council, and were despised by most races because they were seen as power hungry, warmongers, corrupt, and untrustworthy. Perhaps we could get more answers on this when the DLC comes out. I fully expect one or more of Jupiter's moons to come into play as the spot on the reef gives us an indication that it will be there in the future. The Darkness awaits behind the home of the awoken who don't seem to care too much for the Guardians in the first place. End of story mode spoiler that supports this theory.
