  1. OUR MISSION At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive. Join us. Front Page yep, I belong to this group
  2. I created this forum because I am asked a lot "What can I do to help?" "How do I participate?" and "What can I do?" I am on a lot of mailing lists and participate in several e campaigns each month. This forum is not strictly about the environment; it incorporates environmental, business and government concerns on a global scale. It is a forum where people can stop saying "I wish I could do something about..." and participate in real change. Your opinion matters and your voice deserves to be heard. We have to share this planet and should do our best to leave it in better shape then we were born into. Spam and flaming will not be tolerated and will be dealt with harshly. Only legitimate campaigns may be posted.
  3. Dear Friends, Just hours ago, the final candidates for the next President of the United States became clear. They are Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain, and the winner will decide whether the nightmare of the Bush foreign policy is reversed or continued for another 4 years. US citizens will choose their president, but global public opinion matters to them--they know that US respect in the world has plummeted under Bush, and they want a President who can deliver change. In the next few days, our uniquely global community has a real chance to influence the finalist candidates as they develop their campaign strategy. Click below to read and endorse our letter to the candidates. We'll publish it in US newspapers and deliver it personally to the Clinton, Obama and McCain campaigns--we need at least 100,000 people to sign it by Thursday--so please sign and forward this email to friends right away: http://www.avaaz.org/en/us_change_course/4.php The message of the letter is simple: we are all in this together. The world is ready to partner with the US, but we need to see a real change of course from the Bush years. The letter is based on a poll of the Avaaz community, which found that our top 3 requests for change in US policy are: Help the world stop global warming Respect universal human rights Use diplomacy to prevent war and resolve conflict There is a real chance that the candidates could adopt this simple agenda for change, but every day brings more risk that they will commit to another direction. Sign below and forward this email to all your friends and family: http://www.avaaz.org/en/us_change_course/4.php American power is declining in the world, but it still has enormous ability to do good or do harm. It will take decades to undo the global harm done by George Bush's disastrous Presidency. Let's help make sure America's next leader takes a different path. With Hope, Ricken, Iain, Pascal, Ben, Galit, Graziela and the whole Avaaz team. get on their mailing list yo
  4. GREENPEACE ACTION ALERT Get Canon on board Dear Friends Please write a letter to Canon urging them to help stop whaling. http://www.email.greenpeace.org/hddjksw_bvkghmm.html For two weeks the Greenpeace ship tailgated the giant factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, effectively preventing the killing of any whales. By our calculation some 100 whales were spared the harpoon during this time. The faster the chase, the more fuel we burned. In the end we have had to return to port. Now we know the hunt is back on, the covers have come of the harpoon cannons and whales are dying once more in the Sanctuary. Individual whales can be saved in the open ocean, but to protect all of the whales that seek Sanctuary in the Southern Ocean feeding grounds we need to change opinion in Japan. The message needs to be loud and clear that whaling is not only a bad business but it is bad for business. The CEO of Canon is one of the most powerful executives in Japan. He heads up the Japanese Business Federation which looks after the needs of all Japanese businesses. His company has made a name for itself as a defender of wildlife. As one of the most powerful corporations in Japan, Canon can save whales. Best regards, Sara, Karli, Leandra, Iréne, Dave, and everyone on board the Esperanza P.S. Please forward this message to your friends too - 50,000 people have participated so far, we're aiming for 100,000 by the end of the month! get on their mailing list yo

  6. Well, Nami heavily relies on Ussop to stay alive X'D if he didn't make and then upgrade her weapon she wouldn't even be able to fight. Robin tho....mwahaha don't underestimate her powers how many necks and backs did she break leaving Enies Lobby AND was able to help defend Merry from cannon fire. She can also pop eyes and ears out of her phantom arms making her a perfect spy
  7. I would like our next pres to combine our economic and climate problems into a a cooperative solution. Our auto industry used to be this Pontiac GTO: Known as the “First True Muscle Car”, GTO is a high performance car built by Pontiac from 1964 to 1974. Pontiac general manager Elliot Estes approved the GTO (as an option to the Tempest model) despite violating the GM policy due to its 5.4L V8 engine. It became a great success, and marked the beginning of the muslce cars era. Even today it is loved and considered one of the most famous muscle cars ever. Ford Mustang: Probably the most famous of all muscle cars is Ford’s Mustang series. Mustang saw a great deal of success, and inspired a whole new breed of muscle cars, the pony cars. Mustangs have become the dream of every car enthusiast. Many movies, e.g. Gone In 60 Seconds, and computer games have featured this car, adding more to it’s popularity. Chevrolet Camaro: Chevrolet’s Camaro has been the number one competitor of Ford Mustang ever since they were built. In fact, Camaro is categorized as a pony car, which means it was initially inspired by the Ford Mustang. Despite its great success in the 60’s and 70’s, Camaro was always beaten by Mustang in terms of sales. Nonetheless it is a wonderful car, and it is back to compete with Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT500. Look out for the new Camaro around the end of 2007 and/or beginning of 2008. Dodge Charger: Have you seen The Dukes of Hazard? Yes? Then you have seen a Dodge Charger. A wonderful car indeed! Even though Charger entered the battle of the muscle cars a couple of years later, it left a great impression on the competition. Chevrolet Chevelle: Another great muscle car from Chevrolet is the Chevelle. This car was below Camaro in Chevrolet’s product line, therefore was lower in terms of performance. It is still one of the favorite among the muscle fans. *Do I have yer attention yet? X'D* hot hot hot now everybody wants an import because they're more fuel efficient. we need to turn that around. America has produced some of the hottest cars ever, why not combine hot looks and low to zero emissions? Give the sagging auto industry the money they need to get into the 21st century and produce cars we and people abroad want to buy. It will create greener jobs and more money going into our economy. Exxon Mobil reported $40.6 billion net profit for 2007. The oil industry has been spoiled by our govt and multiple oil presidents. Time to turn that shit around too. Huge polluters like Exxon should be raped of profit and that money needs to go into R&D of clean energy. Exxon and others can't depend on drilling much longer, they are pedaling a finite resource. They need to be pushed (or forced at gun point) to invest in their future and ours developing alternative fuels/energy. If not they will eventually fade away. It's smart business for them to invest in green, create new green jobs here in the US, boost our economy, and do something about their evil image. It is also the responsibility of our govt to force polluters who destroy the livelihoods of Americans pay what they owe. Alaskans shouldn't still be waiting for their govt to settle the Valdez case. Our national electric grid is crappy! We need more efficient delivery systems (Albany has a cable filled with liquid nitrogen to cool the metals and the flow of energy through the metal is uber faster with a lot less waste) and we need alternatives to coal gas and nuk power. These renovations would create jobs in R&D and application and it would be another shot in the arm for our economy. Our waste of current energy is phenomenal! Homes and public buildings need new building codes and upgrades so they waste less energy, especially in the north where people heat their homes/offices 24-7 for half the year. Ban the standard light bulb its a piece of shit! Doctoring up current buildings creates green jobs and another boost to the economy. The sun will be here for a few billion more years, the oceans and air are in constant motion. Oil has a few decades and coal will expire some hundred(s) years after that. Solar Wind Hydro power are clean, fossil fuels are dirty. Infinite vs finite Clean vs dirty Which do you think is the better investment? hmmm tough choice NOT
  8. article Super Tuesday failed to spark a decisive battle in the presidential races, with results from two dozen states leaving candidates in both parties far from their respective nominations. Sen. John McCain took the lion's share of Republican delegates on Super Tuesday, but still had only about 51 percent of the amount needed to secure his party's nomination. On the Democratic side, Sen. Hillary Clinton comes away with about 41 percent of the delegates needed for the nomination while Sen. Barack Obama sits at 36 percent. NBC News has projected a Clinton victory California Hillary Clinton 582 delegates Barack Obama 485 delegates I think McCain just about has the rep nomination wrapped up but the dems are still too close to call.
  9. article The dead included 24 people in Tennessee, 13 in Arkansas, and seven in Kentucky, NBC News said. Three were killed in Alabama, emergency officials said. Among the victims were Arkansas parents who died with their 11-year-old in Atkins, about 60 miles northwest of Little Rock The twisters, which also slammed Mississippi, were part of a line of storms that raged across the nation’s midsection at the end of the Super Tuesday primaries in several states. As the extent of the damage quickly became clear, candidates including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee paused in their victory speeches to remember the victims.Northeast of Nashville, Tenn., a spectacular fire erupted at a natural gas pumping station that authorities said could have been damaged by the storms. An undetermined number of people were reported dead. we so need a better alert system
  10. http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/ I'm not posting for any of the other candidates they can suck a rosy fart outta my ass X'D
  11. Walken is just awesome I loved the 'what part of sudden death didn't you understand?' X'D
  12. ummm.... contradiction anyone? ummm... yeah fucktard that's Bush's goal right? Leave the next prez and consequently us screwed.
  13. and the conservative estimates for global sea level rise are over a foot and a half by the end of the century..... and we can't handle rain ....
  14. article The 2009 budget proposed by the White House — which requires congressional approval — includes $25 billion in discretionary budget authority for the Energy Department, up nearly 5 percent from 2008. bad idea #1 Coal is not clean and I highly doubt it ever will be. Just because you have a lot of something doesn't mean you should use it. That money needs to be spent on research and development if our infinite resources- wind solar and wave or we'll just end up in this same situation again further down the road, if we survive that is.its a fuckin tragedy Heating costs have nearly doubled in the north in the past few years. I myself heat with oil which has to be delivered about 4 times a year at over 300$ a pop. The price has gone up about 100$ per delivery since I moved into this little house, my fixed income has gone up about 60$ a month in that same time frame. I have applied for and received HEAP grants over the years now I need one every year. People heating with natural gas and propane don't have it any easier.wtf.... We need a bunch of nukes why? Haven't most humans decided that we don't want a nuk war? I'm confused, why do we have to spend 9 billion dollars to 'secure' junk shit we're never gonna use? Cutting the cash flow into initiatives isn't going to help especially businesses and private homes. That fucks with employment and the housing market a duh. And lets make sure the 4 bil for science goes to the right places, not coal not more oil and gas and not nuk power.
  15. 7 years of George W has left this country in shit shape. Stupid fucker denied climate change until he couldn't anymore. Rather then do something about the disastrous future we're facing the Bush admin focused on the debate of what's caused this. Here's an idea... Who fuckin cares how it happened! What matters is that it is happening and we need to deal with the consequences of a changing climate. Our govt is not prepared to deal with the shitz because of the policys of denial and debate of the current shitty administration. This includes FEMA and its pathetic handling of hurricane Katrina and the EPA's resistance to allow states to make changes in policy to protect their future. Fuckin a rediculious. Here's a lil taste of wtf is going on right now... EPA staff, but not chief, backed Calif. waiver Johnson denied request for tougher greenhouse gas rules WASHINGTON - EPA officials told the agency's administrator that California had "compelling and extraordinary conditions" to justify a federal waiver allowing the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, according to excerpts of documents released Wednesday.Yet when Administrator Stephen Johnson denied the state's request for a waiver in December, he said the California standards were not needed to meet "compelling and extraordinary conditions," one of the criteria in the federal law. The excerpts from Environmental Protection Agency documents were released by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., whose environmental committee is investigating Johnson's decision and has called him to testify at a hearing Thursday. California needs the federal waiver under the Clean Air Act to implement its first-in-the-nation tailpipe rules, which would force automakers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in new cars and light trucks by 2016. At least 16 other states also want to implement the regulations, but they too were blocked when EPA denied California a waiver. Earlier this month, California and other states sued EPA over the decision. The staff report was given to Johnson in a PowerPoint presentation dated late October. The EPA has refused to release unredacted versions of that presentation or other documents in response to congressional demands, citing executive branch confidentiality. But Boxer's aides were allowed to review and transcribe several versions of the 46-page PowerPoint presentation on Tuesday, spending 5 1/2 hours doing so under supervision of EPA staff, Boxer said. EPA officials asked that the information be kept private, but Boxer's staff told EPA they wouldn't agree to that condition, and they released the excerpts to reporters Wednesday. 'The decision was his alone' EPA spokesman Jonathan Shradar said Boxer’s decision to release the excerpts was “troubling,” though he didn’t dispute their accuracy. "All of the information that will be available and has been will prove that (Johnson has) been given a wide range of options and the ramifications, but under the Clean Air Act the decison was his alone and he stands by his decision," Shradar said. The Associated Press and other news outlets previously had reported on the existence of the PowerPoint presentation prepared for Johnson, and that it included the prediction "EPA likely to lose suit" if sued for denying the waiver. There were new details in the excerpts Boxer released Wednesday, including that EPA officials were directed to soften the prediction "EPA likely to lose suit." A later version read: "EPA's litigation risks are significantly higher than if a waiver is granted." Also in the PowerPoint was a slide labeled "If We Grant ..." that included the predictions "likely suit by manufacturers" and "EPA is almost certain to win such a suit." A slide reading "Compelling and Extraordinary Circumstances" said: "California continues to have compelling and extraordinary conditions in general (geography, climatic, human and motor vehicle populations — many such conditions are vulnerable to climate change conditions) as confirmed by several recent EPA decisions ... ." Automakers have opposed giving California the waiver, arguing it would create a "patchwork" of regulations around the country, an argument EPA also adopted. Johnson said that Congress' new fuel-efficiency law, adopted in December, was a better way to go. Environmentalists contend the California law is stronger and takes effect faster than the new federal rules. article for a better idea of what's going on in the west read this FRESNO, Calif. - With water becoming increasingly precious in California, a rising number of farmers figure they can make more money by selling their water than by actually growing something. What effect these deals will have on produce prices remains to be seen, because the negotiations are still going on and it is not yet clear how many acres will be taken out of production. But California grows most of the nation's winter vegetables and about 80 percent of the world's almonds, and it is the No. 2 rice state, behind Arkansas.Environmental restrictions, booming demand for water, and persistent drought along the Colorado River have combined to create one of the worst water shortages in California in the past decade, and prices are shooting up in response. Western Water Woes The study is likely to add to urgent calls for action already coming from western states competing for the precious resource to irrigate farms and quench the thirst of growing populations. Devastating wildfires, avalanches and drought have also underscored the need. “Our results are not good news for those living in the western United States,” they conclude. The research “foretells of water shortages, lack of storage capability to meet seasonally changing river flow, transfers of water from agricultural to urban uses and other critical impacts.” and this is just the west coast
  16. article Tipping point near? New studies suggest the Amazon may be approaching a tipping point, at which the drier conditions caused by deforestation will reduce rainfall enough to transform the humid tropical forest into a giant savanna. If preserving the 80 percent of the Amazon still standing would help offset some greenhouse emissions, destroying it would almost certainly accelerate global warming, by releasing perhaps 100 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere — equal to some 10 years’ worth of total global emissions. “If you cut down all the tropical forests in the world you may increase CO2 concentrations by 25 percent,” said Brazilian climatologist Carlos Alberto Nobre. “It’s important to keep the forests intact because we are in a global warming crisis and it’s important not to reach a tipping point from which we can’t come back.” Deforestation — both the burning and rotting of wood in the Amazon — already releases an estimated 400 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year, accounting for up to 80 percent of Brazil’s greenhouse gases, boosting this country to sixth place or higher among emitter nations. By contrast, each acre of rain forest that remains intact takes somewhere between 80 and 480 pounds of carbon out of the atmosphere each year through the process of photosynthesis. World fells trees at ‘alarming’ rate, experts say
  17. here HONOLULU - All of Hawaii remained under a flash-flood warning Monday after record rainfall as heavy as 11 inches in 24 hours slammed the island chain, closing schools, damaging dozens of homes and holding out the threat of mandatory evacuations. The National Weather Service said a “high alert status” was in effect for Hilo on the Big Island, the state’s second-largest city, where 10.82 inches of rain was recorded Sunday, breaking the 24-hour record by almost 3½ inches. “The situation in Hilo is critical and a life-threatening situation now,” said Harry Kim, mayor of the Big Island, which is also called Hawaii. As many as 150 homes had been damaged by floodwaters rising as high as 4 feet, he said.
  18. Chinese weather 'coldest winter in 100 years' "We have to be clear-minded that the inclement weather and severe disaster will continue to plague certain regions in the south," said a statement issued after Sunday's meeting. "Relief work will continue to face challenges, posing a tough task."The China Meteorological Administration said the weather was the coldest in 100 years in central Hubei and Hunan provinces, going by the total number of consecutive days of average temperature less than 1 degree Celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Fog and night freezes still expected But it expected brighter weather ahead, though fog could become a problem and temperatures at night would likely still be below freezing, slowing the thaw. "The weather over the disaster-stricken regions is likely to turn better in the next several days, but it is still necessary to remain alert for possible low temperatures, frozen rain, snow, freezing and heavy fog," said administration head Zheng Guoguang. He added the cold snap had caught the country off guard, in an area unprepared for such heavy snow. But climate change could see more extremes in weather in China, Zheng warned. check out the pics
  19. w00t LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The Navy must follow environmental laws placing strict limits on sonar training that opponents argue harms whales, despite President Bush's decision to exempt it, a federal judge ruled Monday. The Navy is not "exempted from compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act" and a court injunction creating a 12 nautical-mile no-sonar zone off Southern California, U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper wrote in a 36-page decision. yayyyyyy!
  20. happy fat Tuesday and super Tuesday I don't wanna know who yer voting for (as it may make me hate you for life X'D) but I do wonder what you want to see the next pres do for us. What are the top issues you want to see our next pres deal with?
  21. The Anime Freak is probably the most common, and one of the most annoying. You can usually spot a few warning signs to let you identify them before it's too late: they wear the same exact Evangelion shirt every day, they have more than one anime key chain on their person, they wear glasses, they say phrases in Japanese that hey obviously don't understand (such as "Yes! I will never forgive you!"), they refer to you as "-chan", make obscure Japanese culture references during class, and usually fail class. You have to be extremely careful not to let them smell pity or fear on you, because if they do they will immeadiately latch onto you and suck up both your time and patience, leaving only a lifeless husk. X'D
