Netscape Navigator, the world's first commercial Web browser and the launch pad of the Internet boom, will be pulled off life support Feb. 1 after a 13-year run.Its current caretakers, Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, decided to kill further development and technical support to focus on growing the company as an advertising business. Netscape's usage dwindled with Microsoft Corp.'s entry into the browser business, and Netscape all but faded away following the birth of its open-source cousin, Firefox. link I didn't even know Netscape was still alive to be killed in the first place. Talk about old, Netscape was back in the everybody had a geoshitties site days X'D

Behind the placid pictures, a made-for-TV storm is looming. Since the first days of television, the method of beaming pictures into our living rooms hasn’t changed much. But on Feb. 17, 2009, television stations across the country will hit the off button on this time-tested technology and switch to new transmitters, sending computerized digital signals through the air. When the change comes, the estimated 30 million televisions that use traditional antennas will go to snow without a digital converter box. The cable industry is spending $200 million to educate customers, and Congress has set aside $1.5 billion to help subsidize the purchase of converter boxes. Still, half of American viewers don’t know the storm is coming, according to a poll conducted last month by the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing. For the 1 in 5 American households that still use rabbit ears or antennas on the roof, “the day of reckoning is coming,” said Barry Umansky, a communications professor at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22401907/ the day of reckoning X'D I had to share this cuz I think we all know somebody ( a friend in college or a relative out in the middle of nowhere ) who doesn't have cable tv

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- Only an anti-anxiety medication turned up in toxicology tests done on the body of the 19-year-old gunman who fatally wounded eight people before killing himself last month at a shopping mall. The autopsy report on Robert Hawkins revealed diazepam in his system. The tranquilizer is better known by its market name, Valium. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine told the Omaha World-Herald in a copyright story Tuesday that authorities sometimes "see people who have abused drugs or alcohol to give them the ability to carry out their misdeed." "In this case, it doesn't appear he had abused either," he said. The teen's blood revealed only therapeutic levels of the medication. The autopsy report also said Hawkins killed himself December 5 by a single shot from his assault rifle from under his chin. Before committing suicide, Hawkins went into the Von Maur store at Westroads Mall and took an elevator up to the third floor. There he opened fire, fatally wounding eight people. Five other people were hit by bullets or bullet fragments, injuring two seriously. Investigators will try to find out whether Hawkins had a prescription for the Valium, Kleine said. Diazepam is often given to people who have anxiety attacks or insomnia, said Dr. Todd Stull, director of the University of Nebraska Medical Center's drug and alcohol program. "It's a calming kind of medicine," Stull said. "A lower dose can help with anxiety." People can get high on it, he said, but "it's not a very common addiction." Court records and friends say Hawkins regularly smoked marijuana, but Kleine said there was no evidence of it or any other drugs in his blood. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/01/01/mall.shooting.ap/index.html Doctors generally don't just whip off rx's for Valium like it was an antibiotic. Its more of the 'calm down right now' pill and is usually used in conjunction with an anti depressant. I'll go out on a limb here and guess he didn't have scripts or if he did wasn't following the rx the way he was meant to, prolly no funds for the scripts. This guy was an occasional toker but didn't have much in his system. Maybe if the bastard was sittin home smokin pot and eatin cheetoes nobody woulda had to get shot that day. A lot of ppl will often try to self medicate their anxiety/depression with booze and drugs. Sometimes it works even if its only temporary.

Attn parents! I need advice!

file for sole physical custody as the ex is irresponsible (skippin out on the judges orders when he's had oodles of time to do so) and there are so many needy kids from outside relationships in the house your daughter and her development are on the back burner. the quicker you get into court the less you'll have to deal with those people. get custody and child support taken care of in one shot. You can record phone calls for your lawyer so she can see what she's dealing with but they'll likely be inadmissable in court. keep a 2008 appt book near the phone and record every day/time you're called or do the calling, what it was about and if there were any threats made. if the bitch keeps threatening you report it to the police (that is good documentation for court) and obtain a restraining order if you need to or your lawyer feels its a good idea. the less you deal with these ppl the better. -

let a lawyer handle it. family court is one long bullshit story. yer kid needs a law guardian to investigate both households and see where yer daughter is better off. if you really wanna seal the deal take a few parenting classes "out of your concern for your daughter" of coure. judges and lawyers eat that shit up. makes ya look golden. -

Heat on EPA after Calif. greenhouse gas denial Democrats to investigate agency, Bush stands behind its leader WASHINGTON - Congressional Democrats on Thursday announced an investigation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s refusal to let California implement its tailpipe emissions law, the first step in what will likely be a fierce legal and political battle.House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., sent a letter to EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson demanding “all documents relating to the California waiver request, other than those that are available on the public record.” Waxman told Johnson to have EPA staff preserve all records. The decision against California “appears to have ignored the evidence before the agency and the requirements of the Clean Air Act,” Waxman wrote. He asked for all the relevant documents by Jan. 23. Johnson on Wednesday denied his decision was political, saying it was based on legal analysis of the Clean Air Act. His refusal blocks California and at least 16 other states that wanted to adopt California’s law slashing greenhouse gas emissions from new cars and trucks by a third. President Bush stood by the decision of his EPA administrator. “The question is how to have an effective strategy. Is it more effective to let each state make a decision as to how to proceed in curbing greenhouse gases or is it more effective to have a national strategy,” Bush said at a news conference Thursday. Johnson said California’s emissions limits weren’t needed because Congress just passed energy legislation raising fuel economy standards nationwide. “The director in assessing this law and assessing what would be more effective for the country said we now have a national plan,” said Bush. “It’s one of the benefits of Congress passing this legislation.” Johnson’s long-awaited announcement provoked applause from the auto industry, but an outcry of protest from environmentalists, congressional Democrats and officials in California and other affected states. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger immediately announced plans to fight EPA’s decision. “It is completely absurd to assert that California does not have a compelling need to fight global warming by curbing greenhouse gas emissions from cars,” California Attorney General Jerry Brown said. “There is absolutely no legal justification for the Bush administration to deny this request — Gov. Schwarzenegger and I are preparing to sue at the earliest possible moment.” The tailpipe standards California adopted in 2004 would have forced automakers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in new cars and light trucks by 2016, with the cutbacks beginning in the 2009 model year. Under the Clean Air Act, the state needed a federal waiver to implement the rules, and other states could then adopt them too. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22345011/ *sigh*
